Getting around
Green & calm
Vibe
Ubud has become one of Bali’s busiest towns, with traffic, crowds and queues at the famous spots. But the jungle and rice fields around it are still beautiful, and quiet, if you time it right.
Campuhan Ridge at sunrise
This easy ridge walk starts in town and runs along a grassy ridge between two river valleys. Go at first light, before it gets hot and busy.
Rice terraces, early or elsewhere
Tegallalang is the famous one and gets crowded by mid-morning. Arrive very early, or drive further to Jatiluwih, a UNESCO-listed landscape of rice terraces that’s far larger and calmer.
Temples and water
Visit water temples like Tirta Empul early in the day, and wear a sarong (often provided at the entrance). Be respectful of ceremonies; they take priority over visitors.
Stay outside the centre
Pick a guesthouse in the villages around Ubud, like Penestanan or Keliki. You get rice-field views and quiet nights, and you're still a short ride from town.
Combine Ubud with a few days in Sidemen and Amed for an even slower Bali trip.
Bali the Slow Way, 8 days
Sidemen, Mt Batur at sunrise and Amed’s reefs with a small group.
