Fort Kochi is made for slow walking: shady streets, colonial buildings, cafés and art spaces, all close together. This route covers the highlights in a day with plenty of time to sit down.
Morning: the waterfront
Start at the Chinese fishing nets on the beach road around sunrise, when fishermen lower and raise the huge cantilevered nets. Walk on to St Francis Church, one of the oldest European churches in India, and the Santa Cruz Basilica nearby.
Midday: Mattancherry
Head east to Mattancherry. Visit the Mattancherry Palace, known for its murals, then wander through Jew Town’s antique shops and spice warehouses to the Paradesi Synagogue. Check opening days before you go; the synagogue is closed on some days of the week.
Evening: Kathakali
Several small theatres in Fort Kochi run nightly Kathakali shows. Arrive early to watch the performers put on their elaborate make-up.
Beat the heat
Walk early and late, and spend the hottest hours in a café or a museum. Rent a bicycle if you want to cover more ground.
Getting there
From Ernakulam, take the public ferry across the harbour to Fort Kochi. It’s cheap, quick and the nicest way to arrive.
Backwaters & Spice Hills, 6 days
Village canoe trails, Munnar tea estates and homestays, with a small group.
The Strolling Backpacker
Slow traveller and budget nerd, writing honest guides about the long way round.
