Easy, some hills
Effort
Jodhpur is one of Rajasthan’s most walkable cities. The old town sits below Mehrangarh Fort, and its lanes are painted in shades of blue that glow in the morning light.
Mehrangarh Fort
Arrive when it opens to beat the tour groups and the heat. The audio guide is excellent, and the views from the ramparts over the blue city are the best in town. Allow two to three hours.
The blue lanes
Walk down from the fort through Brahmpuri and Navchokiya, the old neighbourhoods where the blue houses are most concentrated. Wander without a plan, be respectful when taking photos, and stop for chai along the way.
Toorji ka Jhalra and the clock tower
This restored 18th-century stepwell is a lovely spot to sit in the afternoon, with cafés overlooking it. A few minutes away, the Sardar Market around the clock tower is busy, loud and full of spices, textiles and snacks.
Try the local snacks
Look for mirchi bada (stuffed chilli fritters) and makhaniya lassi near the clock tower. Eat where locals queue.
Where to stay
Stay in a haveli guesthouse in the old town. Many have rooftop restaurants with views of the fort lit up at night.
Forts, Stepwells & Desert Nights
7 days through Jaipur, Jodhpur and the Thar, with a small group.
The Strolling Backpacker
Slow traveller and budget nerd, writing honest guides about the long way round.
