Stay
A night in the Thar Desert is a highlight of any Rajasthan trip. But “desert camp” can mean anything from a quiet fire under the stars to a loud resort with a stage and a buffet. Choosing well makes all the difference.
Sam: the busy option
The Sam dunes are the most famous and the easiest to reach. In peak season they get crowded, with jeep rides, cultural shows and many camps side by side. Good if you want a lively evening.
Khuri: quieter
Khuri, south-west of Jaisalmer, has smaller dunes and fewer visitors. Camps here tend to be simpler and calmer.
Non-commercial dunes
Some local operators run camel safaris to quiet dunes away from the camps, where you eat around a fire and sleep on a mattress under the stars. Ask for recent reviews and agree exactly what’s included before you pay.
| Option | Vibe | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Sam | Lively, crowded in season | Shows and a resort-style night |
| Khuri | Calmer, smaller dunes | A quieter camp |
| Non-commercial dunes | Remote, simple | Stars and silence |
Dress for the night
Desert days can be warm, but winter nights drop close to freezing. Bring layers, a hat and a torch.
Save a day for Jaisalmer Fort itself, one of the few forts in India where people still live inside the walls.
