Best season
Mount Batur is an active volcano in north-east Bali and one of the island’s most popular hikes. You climb in the dark to reach the rim before sunrise, then watch the sky light up over Lake Batur, with Mount Agung on the horizon.
How it works
- Most treks pick you up from Ubud or Kintamani in the very early hours.
- The climb takes about two hours on loose volcanic gravel, with some steep sections near the top.
- Breakfast is often cooked using the volcano’s steam.
- Hikers usually go with a local guide; tours include one.
What to pack
- Trail shoes with good grip
- A warm layer and a wind jacket: it’s cold at the top before sunrise
- A head torch
- Water and a snack
Go in the dry season
April to October gives you the best chance of a clear sunrise. In the wet season, clouds often cover the view.
Afterwards, many tours stop at natural hot springs by the lake, which feel great on tired legs.
